Vacuum Advice Please

Our vacuum has just about taken its last breath suck.

It is actually the combination of two vacuums at this point, with a short in the powerhead, missing pieces, and now . . . a crack underneath (currently being somewhat remedied with a large piece of duct tape).

I have a houseful of kids.  I have a big hairy dog.  I live in a rainy, muddy, leafy, pine-needly environment.

I cannot live without a vacuum.

A vacuum is the first thing I'm going to buy, once our 60 days of nothing is over (update coming soon).

ADVICE NEEDED--What vacuum to buy?

I am so passionate about my vacuum that I love to share with anyone who will listen!!!! We finally stepped up and paid $600 for an Oreck about 6 years ago. We bought the XL and then it comes with the canister which is the most used tool around our home. WE bought the XL since it has two speeds which is perfect as we only have a little bit of carpet in our home, most is either tile or hardwood floors. The low speed we use on non-carpet and high on carpet. For the $600, our vacuum gets serviced for 21 years once a year for free. It has been by far the best investment we have made on a household item.

I see target is now selling them too. I am not sure if they are the same thing when you buy from a mom and pop store which is my preferred method of purchase, but it may be worth looking into.

I can't imagine not having my light as feather Oreck that does all the heavy work!!

Go buy one!!! You will love me for it!!!

They are more expensive, but ARE AS GOOD AS THEY CLAIM! Dyson :) With several kids....sand everywhere....and a few pets ourselves it does the job & takes a licking....and still ticks!!! :)

My Dyson vacuum has been hands down the best vacuum we've ever owned. We use it daily, it sucks up tons of stuff, and never clogs. It is easy to empty (no bags), has tools and a long hose for doing furniture, cars, etc.

I love our Dyson as well. But if you're looking for a canister, I have a Consumer Reports that recommends the Kenmore Progressive 27514 and Panasonic MC-CG902 for best buys, and also recommends the Kenmore Intuition 28014, Hoover WindTunnel S3670, Miele S 2120 Olympus, and Hoover Platinum Bagless Canister S3865. Enough information to sift through? I'd probably go with a Dyson through Costco. Dyson does make a canister now too.

My Dyson is a lemon! I have to take it across town to the only certified repair shop. They always repair it for free, but it is a huge hassle! I have had it about 3 years and taken it in for repair about once a year for pretty major stuff. My housekeeper says my dyson is the only bad one of all of her clients, though. I won't buy another Dyson!
